Shanghai Supper Club

Location
London, United Kingdom

Welcome to the Shanghai Supper Club, a whimsical restaurant for the Marriott that fuses the vibrant cultures of the Far and Middle East.

When we initially started working on the brand, we wanted to create something sophisticated that would complement Shanghai Supper Club’s self-assured confidence. This overtly modern Chinese identity balances out the opulence of the interior mood material palette by providing subtle contemporary references manifested in menu designs, plating and bill folds.

As a dining experience, we constantly drew reference from traditional Chinese rituals, symbolism and craft which allowed diners to immerse themselves in an intricate labyrinth of dark textured corridors inspired by calligraphic markings and traditional zen gardens. To balance this out, a focus was put on warm ambient lighting to delineate tumbled pebble-lined walkways, expose the intricate hand-carved walnut base of the bar and bring the illustrative silk screen in the main dining room to life.

Organic materials play a vital role in harmonising this restaurant. Natural terracotta and square staggered ebony parquet floor tiles, marry up to curved black pigmented lime plaster walls. Punctuated by a pair of traditional circular moon gates, these wall openings allow diners to navigate between the restaurant's intricate nooks and expose the layers of Shanghai Supper Club.
